baby pictures

yup, that's me.  these pictures are treasures from my childhood actually. when i look at them i think of my dad (a farmer at the time) and my mom (she sewed both of the dresses i'm wearing).  these images are "tangible tools" for me.  really... what was so terribly awful at the moment to make me so unhappy and almost pathetic? and, in contrast, what was going on that made me that super happy (still) pudgy girly?

these photos remind me that i do get to make choices for myself.  i am in control of me (and only me).  often my actions can either make me "be" like the picture on the left or the picture on the right.

“between stimulus and response,

there is a space.

in that space

lies our freedom and power

to choose our response.

in our response

lies our growth and freedom.”

what mindfulness is

in one word, i would say "awareness."  i would also include "beauty" as another one-word definition. it has been defined by others as "moment-to-moment awareness" or a way "to be aware of what is happening in the present moment." take it one step further (a giant LEAP further in most cases) and add that mindfulness is a way to be non-judgemental about what is happening right now.  the focus is on "being" rather than "doing." it provides peace and calm even amidst suffering and chaos. i believe it will bring you closer to you ... where ever and whoever "you" are.

"start where you are" - pema chodron

if all that sounds a bit too mystical for you, allow me to put it another way ...

your brain releases the hormones cortisol and adrenaline even when it just "thinks" it's in a state of stress.  stress is the number one factor causing disease and aging today.  we, on average, have about 60,000 thoughts a day and unfortunately they are primarily circling around fear, anxiety, depression, anger and worry.  our brain is already predicting the next crisis and/or ruminating over the less-than-favorable issues that happened yesterday (or last month or even last year). mindfulness is a way to tip the scale back to our given birthright to be centered, peaceful, calm and equanimous.

sound good?  it is!

mindfulness course components

i have married many sources of wisdom and knowledge together and synthesized them seamlessly, this is not one person's work, but truly the work of so many, including pema chodron, jon kabat-zinn, thich nhat hanh and louise hay (just to name a few).  since i am Christian, you will see references to Christianity in coursework as well.  i also find the writings of dr. suess and eric carle to be quite profound.

you will be provided doses of mindfulness education on a monthly basis.  each of the 12 classes will be broken down in the following general format:

"the big picture"

- stand back and consider a viewpoint from a larger expanse

"a piece of the pie"

- a fundamental mindfulness principle will be discussed in more detail

"light bulbs"

- moments you can relate to ... many from my life directly, a few from other sources - think illumination

"practice"

- some suggestions on how to weave mindfulness into your days

"tangible tools"

- some items you may already have around that may help solidify a concept

"recommended reading"

- a highly regarded book you can check out from the library or purchase

i tend to be generous, so don't be surprised if you get an extra lesson from time to time. perhaps something related to a current event or happening, focus on a certain time of year, or simply "just because."  i love quotes, if you haven't caught on to that yet (i keep a journal of them), so quotes will often be included in lessons.

why learn mindfulness from lisa patterson?

a valid question... and it's one i have asked myself, actually.

the resume answer:

i am dedicated and passionate about the work that i do.  i have excellent knowledge on the subject, the skill set, and the ability to present the material in an organized and meaningful fashion.  i possess the willingness and drive to accomplish the task.  i will exceed your expectations.

the spiritual answer:

teaching mindfulness is the next natural step for me; i see the signs directing me here.  mindfulness, has been a part of my life almost as long as massage therapy.  when i began teaching massage therapy in 2008, it made me look at my craft with fresh, new eyes.  i fell in love with it all over again.  teaching some of what i know to others and listening to their questions and watching them work has made me a better therapist.  i could not be any more certain that mindfulness has changed my life for so much good.  i'd like to share that gift with you.  developing coursework has allowed me to articulate my knowledge and challenge myself in ways i could have never imagined, even just two years ago.

my heart answer:

do what i can to share what i know. i believe there are so many who will benefit from mindfulness.

some of the "chapters" my life has experienced include:  climbing the corporate ladder (as a young female), a false sense of preparedness for the delivery of my first child, a completely different experience for the delivery of my second child, being a stay-at-home mom, starting my own small business, living through financial destruction, finding financial security, having the best friends and family anyone could be blessed with, experiencing a few challenging friends and family moments, and being married since 1994. (do any of your relationships have ups and downs too?)

why you?

there is no prerequisite for this e-course. you can be any age, any race, any gender.  you need not hold any particular belief or follow any particular religion (or any religion at all). "be" you.  i tell my kids that "imperfection IS perfection" and i believe we all need to be reminded of this.  mindfulness invites you to come as you are and get closer to you.

"don't believe something to be true until you know it for yourself" - unknown

what mindfulness is not

it's not avoidance of the issues

it's not running from reality

it doesn't prevent bad things from happening

it does not mean you won't get angry and loose it sometimes

it is not a religion

mindfulness helps to tip the scale of awareness to the beauty that surrounds us all even when a meltdown is completely legitimate.
